Review of Dainty Dottie Dee: Poetry

Dainty Dottie Dee by James Stevenson

This is a poem about a woman named Dottie Dee who is overly obsessive about cleaning stuff. This woman doesn't just clean like the "normal" person would. If Dottie Dee saw a bug, "she tidies up that bug." Dottie Dee even washes her shampoo but she has a very strange cleaning habit that is revealed in the end of the poem.
The sound devices used in this poem were rhyme and rhythm. Rhyme is displayed as every other line in the poem has an end rhyming word. This poem had a rhythm to it as you read that just formed and flows naturally. The rhyme and rhythm used in this writing are the two elements used to make it poetry.
I enjoyed this poem because although it was silly I can think of a few women I know myself who tend to go overboard like Dottie Dee when it comes to cleaning. Some of the lines and actions of Dottie Dee don't even make sense as why someone would "wax the salami", but it's a fun poem and gets the readers mind wondering. The poem was very interesting and gets the readers attention from the very beginning. The rhythm of this poem was easy to catch onto which made it easy to read aloud to my peers.

  1. Dottie Dee sounds like a great poem to use in the classroom. The rhyme and rhythm will help with the fluency of the reader and because the poem is so "fun" I think it will motivate the students to enjoy reading poetry! -Kaitlyn Morefield

  2. Your description of this poetry book makes me want to read it! With the poetry elements and the humor, it seems it would be a book that children would really enjoy reading or having read to them. The rhythm and rhyme in the book would make it easy for children to remember the words and learn new vocabulary. The humor and silliness in the items she is cleaning would make it very appealing to children. Thanks for sharing

  3. This poetry book sounds very fun and engaging for students. The description grabbed my attention so I can only imagine what reading the book would be like! If you were reading this to children in the classroom you could encorporate the elements of poetry as well as why it is important to be neat and clean. This could go along with weekly classroom cleaning jobs and such. Great job on this blog post! Love the picture too! :)

  5. Your review of Dainty Dottie Dee was so exciting, I actually googled it so I could read it myself! It was very funny and would definitely be interesting to young children. I really enjoyed this poem because Dainty Dottie Dee reminded me of Monk from one of my favorite television series, Monk. Monk suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD)and multiple phobias, which sounds a lot like Dainty Dottie Dee! Great Job!
